Sleeping Beauty Castle"Fantasyland is the world of imagination, hopes, and dreams. It is dedicated to the young and the young in heart...to those who believe that when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true". Walt Disney

The story of how the design of Briar Rose's residence, Sleeping Beauty Castle, came to be at Disneyland, is certainly worth discussing. If you study the first 'official' concept drawing of Disneyland as rendered by Herb Ryman under Walt's direct supervision, Fantasyland was to be almost entirely enclosed within the walls of a castle. The general layout concept (walls surrounding the location with a separate castle main structure built upon an elevated foundation) and the architecture of the castle itself, closely resembles Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany. As the concept of Disneyland progressed and its general layout refined, the idea of enclosing Fantasyland completely within the castle walls was modified and the castle's main structure was picked up and incorporated directly above the castle entrance. This move not only saved extremely tight construction costs, but allowed more room for attractions within the realm. Additionally, the impressive 'presence' of the castle as we approach accross the causeway and drawbridge, wouldn't have been nearly so dramatic as originally conceived. I'm not sure of precisely when the decision to name the castle after Sleeping Beauty was made, but it appears it was very early on in the development of the Park. The name was most certainly Walt's idea and he had a certain degree of self-promotion with it. When the Park opened in 1955, the animated feature, "Sleeping Beauty," was still four years away from release! Also interesting to note, while Sleeping Beauty Castle is usually always described as the ultimate stereotypical "medieval" fortress, the real castle that served as its direct inspiration, Neuschwanstein, did not begin construction until 1869 and wasn't completed until well into the 20th century!

In this shot I have begun to add scenic details to the sculpture. I first darkened the the area of the waterfall to represent "wet" rock and then carefully painted the water itself using gloss white enamel. The trick is to make it look like actual falling water. All of the rock-work has been repainted and dry-brushed to highlights and bring out the details.

I painted the portcullis a dark brown and then dry-brushed on a bit of rust color.
